My artwork is based on personal memories and experiences that effect greater society and myself. By illustrating these memories in the form of wood engravings, events in my past have surfaced and my emotions surrounding the event have become definitive. Because my artwork is narrative, it is best expressed through a printmaking medium whose historical foundations were originally illustrative.
My prints depict memorable events in my life using self-portraiture paired with an animal image representative of a feeling, emotion or occasionally another being. I assign each emotion an animalistic form to better identify and clarify my own feelings, as well as to emote a visceral human reaction. By replacing a human sentiment with a creature, which is believed to have no realm of cognitive emotion, an interesting juxtaposition presents itself. I elevate the beast to a higher status by allowing it to be the emotion. The selection process of the animal is based on my own intuition, although general stereotypes and facts about the animal influence my decision.
By creating a personal narrative using my own image and that of an animal, my feelings surrounding an event become clearer. The small-scale black and white wood engravings, whose inherent illustrative qualities allude to storytelling, prove to be the best mediums to express myself.
